A retro-futuristic installation by Holoque Teatre with augmented reality
Steam Pinballs is an interactive stage installation that blends the retro aesthetics of classic pinball machines with cutting-edge digital technologies. Developed for Holoque Teatre, the project turns five independent pinball units into immersive experiences using augmented reality, each with its own visual universe, narrative and set of challenges.
Each machine operates autonomously, combining a Microsoft Hololens 2 with a custom-made Unity 3D application that overlays real-time digital content onto the physical environment. The Hololens communicates directly with an Arduino board embedded in each pinball. On top of these, we designed and implemented a custom electronic extension board that controls all analog elements of the machine—flippers, bumpers, lights and other electromechanical components.
The result is a unique installation that transforms the classic pinball game into a hybrid experience, where physical and digital realms blend in a fluid and surprising way.
We are especially proud of what we achieved with Steam Pinballs—a technically complex and artistically engaging installation built to endure and evolve over time.
